Barrancos Invertidos

The research project "Barrancos Invertidos" (lit. Inverted Ravines) was an initiative proposed by private sector architects and carried out jointly with the local government and members of the academy. The objective of this research was to analyze and classify the ravines of Guatemala City - which occupy 41% of the total territory of the Municipality - in a baseline of geo-referential information, for the realization of sustainable public policies, all the while according to the processes of urbanization, to the urban-social ecology, and to the preexisting settlements (defying, in turn, social challenges and urban segregation). The results of this project revealed the potential of the ravines in the urban agenda of the city. Breaking paradigms and reconsidering a productive, sustainable and economic use of these spaces, the innovation also suggests the creation of public policies of a territorial order that would re-qualify these spaces for the use or the construction of rain collectors or bridges, among other considerations.

Institutional design

?

Formalization: is the innovation embedded in the constitution or legislation, in an administrative act, or not formalized at all?

Frequency: how often does the innovation take place: only once, sporadically, or is it permanent or regular?

Mode of Selection of Participants: is the innovation open to all participants, access is restricted to some kind of condition, or both methods apply?

Type of participants: those who participate are individual citizens, civil society organizations, private stakeholders or a combination of those?

Decisiveness: does the innovation takes binding, non-binding or no decision at all?

Co-governance: is there involvement of the government in the process or not?
