Forums of the Coalition for Democratic Broadcasting

The Forums of the Coalition for Democratic Broadcasting is a group formed by different social organizations (press unions, universities, community radio, human rights organizations, government agencies, among others) that was formed to prepare, present and advocate for a new legislative scheme of broadcasting that would replace pre-existing legislation in Argentina, which had been established by the last military dictatorship. To this end, the Coalition organized and carried out forums and meetings throughout the country for five years, from which discussions and contributions prepared an agenda with 21 essential points for a new law, agreed on by all of the social actors involved. This experience was a direct antecedent of the sanction of the Law of Audiovisual Communication Services in 2009. Although the initial objective was fulfilled in 2009, the group continued its activities in view of the many limitations and difficulties that the law later found to achieve its full validity due to conflicts with media monopolies.
