Referendum on the use of the Bank Fund for Savings Protection

The Referendum on the use of the Bank Fund for Savings Protection (Span. FOBAPROA) was organized by the Party of the Democratic Revolution. It was organized with the aim of informing the public that by converting some of the savings fund to assist banks in the face of the financial crisis of 1994, citizens would have to assume the payment of the bank bailout. Likewise, it was sought to know the citizen's preference regarding how to deal with the debt problem. Two million people participated, of which 96.43 percent selected the party's proposal to solve FOBAPROA's problem: the refusal to convert debt; the punishment of public officials, bankers and businessmen who caused the banking crisis; the implementation of a program to solve the problem of small and medium-sized debtors, and reform the banking system, among others. Only 0.93 percent of respondents opted for the government's proposal, while 1.57 percent voted other alternatives and 2.07 percent nulled their vote.
