Census of Women Deprived of Freedom

The Census of Women Deprived of Freedom was conducted in 2015 by the National Mechanism for the Prevention of Torture (Mecanismo Nacional de Prevención de la Tortura, MNP), and was designed to provide accurate information on the living conditions of women deprived of liberty in the country. Institutional agreements with universities helped to procure volunteer students to become directly involved in the monitoring objective of the MNP. These volunteers, coming from the psychology, social sciences, law and social work faculties, collaborated on and were trained through fieldwork, carrying out surveys and observations, and processing data. The objective of the research was to generate scientific and updated information on the reality of women deprived of liberty to facilitate the monitoring mission of the MNP. In addition, with the participation of university students, civil society was directly involved in the monitoring process, reinforcing the active role of the university in society. In this case, civil society was involved in the creation of basic knowledge for the design of public policies that responded to the problems of the most vulnerable sectors of society.
