Consultative Councils of Uruguayans Residents Abroad

The Consultative Councils are part of a Frente Amplio policy of linking with the Uruguayan diaspora. It began in 2005 with the creation of the Directorate of Consular Affairs and Linkage within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. At this address is the D20 (Department 20 - Uruguay has 19 departments inside) office that is responsible for linking with Uruguayans abroad. The Councils must have a minimum of 5 members and are elected by universal and direct voting of all Uruguayans residing abroad in the corresponding area of ??residence. The objective of the Councils is to contribute to a better functioning of the Foreign Service and also establish a monitoring body. But beyond this they must promote the culture and economy of Uruguay abroad and give an account of the problems and needs that have the residents abroad. A central theme for the Councils has also been the vote from abroad. Up to 2016, 43 councils had been confirmed.
