Referendum to Approve the Draft Constitution of 1999
After six months of work, the Constituent Assembly in charge of drafting a new constitutional text convened the referendum to approve the draft constitution for December 15, 1999. The question was: "Do you approve the Constitution drafted by the National Constituent Assembly?" For the "Yes", 71.78% of valid votes were counted, while the "No" won 28.22%. Abstention stood at 56%.
