National Peace Conference 2014

The National Peace Conference was convened at the beginning of 2014 by President Nicolás Maduro following repeated street protests that year. It promoted dialogue with sectors of the political and economic opposition. A space of dialogue was convened with invited representatives of these sectors, seeking to bring them together and discuss the issues that were provoking the protests. At the meeting, 29 representatives of the business sector were invited; among them the Federation of Chambers (Fedecámaras), the Federation of Industries (Fedeindustrias) and the Empresa Polar Group, as well as representatives from the media. Delegates from the National Electoral Council (CNE), the Supreme Court of Justice, the Attorney General of the Republic and the National Assembly (AN) also attended. However, the refusal to participate by the Democratic Unity Board (Mesas de la Unidad Democrática; MUD), which united the opposition political parties, had as a consequence that the dialogues could not have continuity.
