Local participation for the improvement of neighborhoods and coexistence

The Local participation for the improvement of neighborhoods and coexistence (Guararí de Heredia, Costa Rica), sought to transform the environment, generating a process of urban renewal through the improvement of the neighborhood and the creation of conditions for coexistence and security. The practice was developed from the work of the Association of Integral Development, a participatory forum that brings together the leadership of the community in association with the Municipality of Heredia. The priorities of the project were defined by the Municipality of Heredia, the Association for Integral Development and, later, a participatory forum of organizations and leaders of the settlement, in an equally participatory process of diagnosis, definition of priority needs and negotiation of agendas. From this project, the Municipality began to register improvements in the community infrastructure, the viability of public services; improvements in youth education, with a significant percentage of young people now in formal secondary education; and permanent improvement in security rates and positive perception of security in neighborhoods; among others.
