Marine Turtle Spawning Habitat Protection Project in Tortuguero
The Marine Turtle Spawning Habitat Protection Project in Tortuguero arises from the initiative of the Rural Aqueduct Association of Tortuguero, which brought together representatives of citizens and local businesses to begin the environmental recovery of the area. In 2006, Tortuguero faced a serious waste management problem. Waste was incinerated in the open, then buried and later accumulated non-stop on the same beaches where different species of turtles came every year to spawn. In addition, there was an outbreak of dengue that kept the State and the Municipality on alert, which even led to the suspension of various public activities. Against this background, the Rural Aqueduct Association of Tortuguero brought together community leaders, neighbors, hoteliers and other self-employed entrepreneurs, who had to carry out the task of restoring an abandoned place to become the center of operations for the recycling plant. The Municipality contributed funds and the Association of Tourist Guides made donations.
