National Council of the Montubio Nation of Ecuador (CODEPMOC)

The National Council of the Montubio Nation of Ecuador of the Ecuadorian Coast and Subtropical Areas of the Coastal Region (Span. CODEPMOC) is a collegial body linked to the Presidency of the Republic of Ecuador. It was created in 2001 by Executive Decree No. 1394, after dismemberment of the Development Council of The Nationalities and Peoples of Ecuador (Span. CODENPE). Its main purpose is to promote policies to improve the living conditions for the Montubio communities of Ecuador and promote the development and diversification of economic activities in the region. Montubios are people with their own cultural identity, who live along the coastal and subtropical zones of Ecuador, and work primarily as small farmers. They comprise 1485 self-defined communities that include around 70,000 people. Their representatives for the Council are elected directly by these communities during assemblies held in the Ecuadorian provinces. By 2014 this Council was in transition towards the formation of the National Council of Equality of Peoples and Nationalities of Ecuador.
