Community Development Association (Asociaciones de Desarrollo Comunal; ADESCO)
Community Development Associations (Asociaciones de Desarrollo Comunal; ADESCOS) are community organizations that promote development at the community level. They work together with the mayor and local governments for the promotion and implementation of projects that benefit the community and improve their living conditions in areas such as health, education, water, infrastructure, and housing, among many others. They are composed of a maximum of 25 representatives, convene community assemblies to discuss public affairs and the needs of citizens, and mediate between citizens and authorities. These instances of participation are recognized by the Municipal Code of El Salvador and have been extended by the country at the local level. Recently, some of the ADESCOS adopted working commissions to facilitate the elaboration of reports and petitions between community members, specialists, and local governments.
